The Postmodern Cypriot
This ongoing project was inspired from moving back home after living abroad for five years, and from different conversations I had about culture and tradition. I came across many views, the most common one being that tradition is a dying thing of the past. Something for old people to remember, and for young people to forget. My father always talks about tradition is a somewhat bitter and nostalgic way. When he shows me pictures from his past life, I think that perhaps he is even angry. Angry because he feels like Cyprus is losing its identity while younger generations are dismissive about all this.
The only certainty we are given in life, is that things will change. Heraclitus said it well, "you cannot step into the same river twice". Is tradition really dying or is it just changing in the same way a river changes? Does it have to be a bitter memory of the past, or can it coexist with today, tomorrow and the days to come?
